In New Zealand, you generally do not need a building consent for a deck if it is impossible to fall more than 1.5 metres from the surface. However, any deck where a person could fall 1 metre or more must have a safety barrier that complies with the Building Code. Pergolas are usually exempt if they are not roofed. We can assess your specific site and handle the consent process if your design exceeds these limits.
Most retaining walls under 1.5 metres do not require a building consent, provided they are not supporting a “surcharge” (extra load) like a driveway, a swimming pool, or a building. If your wall is over 1.5 metres or sits on a steep slope, we will work with an engineer to ensure the design is consented and structurally sound for the Hawke’s Bay terrain.
